To hold

To hold has several meanings. I need one used as a reporting verb, but I must know if it is used reporting both what somebody said or what somebody thought. So I'd like to know if I'm able to say:

I hold my opinion - mantengo mi opinión
I hold a conversation - mantengo una conversación

Are both sentences correct?

Thanks.

'I hold an opinion' = I have a specific opinion.
If the opinion does not change, I still hold the same opinion
I hold a conversation - mantengo una conversación
Also: I can hold my own in any discussion (although that is a specific idiom)

Then, how would you say "mantengo mi opinión sobre este tema"?

I maintain my opinion on this topic. (Almost word for word)

I have this verb, too, "maintain". So "maintain" would be referred to something that somebody said and "hold" would be to what somebody thought. Am I correct?

Ah no - sorry.

To hold = to have, so that to have an opinion = to hold an opinion.

To maintain = keep the same

If, say, you held an opinion, and somebody discussed it and provided more information to change your opinion, but which you don't change, then you maintain the opinion, i.e still hold the same one..

So, both of them are related to the thought, not to the saying, aren't them?

You could imagine a conversation:

A: Do you have any thoughts on this subject?

B: Yes, I hold a strong opinion, because bla bla bla...

A: And did you know that bla bla bla ....

B: No, I didn't, but I still maintain my opinion...

I didn't know you used "bla, bla, bla", too

Thanks.

That sounds marked to me (and the BNC doesn't contain a single instance of someone talking about maintaining an opinion).

I stand by my opinion.
That doesn't change my opinion.
