Hacer tiempo

Para hacer tiempo , vamos a hacer un crucigrama mientras los otros llegan.
How can we translate "hacer tiempo" in this context?

well we also have pasar el tiempo, hacer tiempo means, do sth else so that the latecomers don´t miss anything. Is pass the time the equivalent in that context?

I agree with the above but I would also say that hacer tiempo (mientras se espera algo) is to while away the time, to kill time, right?
