Ve la paja en el ojo de un ajeno
I think it means: he sees the flies on others but not the bear on his back, but I'm not sure. Has anyone seen this phrase before?

You're right. It has a Biblic origin: Mathew 7:1-5 ( Mateo 7:1-5)

Interesting. The Spanish is more comprehensible than the English.
Thanks, Sosia.

That's because the King James version was published in 1611 and the Spanish version is from the Reina Valera, revised and updated in 1960.
