Paleta

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for July 27, 2008

paleta - feminine noun (la) - lollipop, popsicle. Look up paleta in the dictionary

Se antoja una paleta de hielo cuando hace mucho sol.
A popsicle hits the spot on a hot, sunny day.

En España no se usa paleta con el sentido de popsicle, sino polo.

Sin embargo:
  • La paleta de Sorolla es muy cromática.
  • Es una mujer de pueblo, un poco paleta.
  • El albañil y su paleta, hombre y herramienta.

So paleta in Spain means pallet in English.
What do Spaniards use for popsicle?

We use polo for popsicle. You can also hear helado but it's not precise, as helado means ice cream.

Interesting, as far as I know, polo in Mexico only refers to the game water polo.

Yes, that is. And I guess in English you say palette (of a painter) to what in Spanish is called paleta (de pintor).
La paleta de un pintor es el utensilio en el cual extiende los colores antes de pintar. Figuradamente, se entiende por paleta de un pintor el conjunto de colores que suele utilizar en sus cuadros.

Pallet (same pronunciation as palette) refers to a wooden platform that you stack goods on for transport. The forks of a forklift fit into it to move it around. Pallet can also be used as a verb.

Palate (again, the same pronunciation) = paladar.

Pallete se refiere tanto a la bandeja de aluminio o plástico con huecos donde un pintor mescla sus colores, como simplemente un una gama de colores disponibles. En México se usa codete en lugar de paleta. No sé si también se entiende paleta.

En inglés, un pintor usa un palette knife para mesclar mezclar sus pinturas, creo que en español eso se llamaría espátula. Se parece a la espátula de albañil en miniatura.
