Sí que se sigue usando. Aquí en España cuando te diriges a alguien que no conoces le dices "¿Cómo está Usted?. También se usa con personas mayores y con gente de un nivel (intelectual o profesional) superior al tuyo.

I think another use for usted can be where you want to keep a relationship at "arms-length" in situations where you would otherwise probably be using the tu. For example a work colleague who you simply don't like very much.
