A somewhat old-fashioned term with the exact meaning is the apple of my eye. Example: John is the apple of his father's eye.

No conocía esa expresión. Aquí se usa "ser la niña de los ojos de alguien".
("La niña del ojo" es una forma de llamar a la pupila.)

Juan es la niña de los ojos de su padre. (Yes, even though it's a masculin here)

I have heard both, and usually "ojito derecho" for boys and "niña" for girls, but can be used both ways.

"el pelota Luis es el ojito derecho del profesor"
"Luisa es la niña de los ojos de su padrino"
