Pregonar
Does pregonar mean to announce, or does it mean to announce something that should be a secret (spill the beans)--or is it a matter of
context?

If what you're announcing was a secret, or a piece of news that no one knows yet, pregonar means to make public or reveal. Otherwise, it can mean to extol, when you're talking about virtues. If you're selling something, it can be used to mean to cry or announce loudly. To proclaim is another possible translation.

Rusty's spot on. In my opinion, pregonar is a bit of an archaic term: pregonero = town crier or herald.

Thanks guys. I read the word pregonar in today's El Pais. You may be right about it being archaic, though. I'm under the impression that some Spanish reporters are frustrated authors.

I don't think pregonar is archaic. Pregonero is archaic because there is not people working on this anymore, but you can use pregonar in a lot of contexts.

I'm with Alfonso. "Pregonero" it's archaic, but not the verb
"El vendedor pregonaba las ventajas de su mercancía" "ese ya va por ahí pregonando el dinero que gana con su nuevo trabajo" Saludos |
