Perder la chaveta

Perder la chaveta

I know it means to lose one's marbles. Is it a phrase used in Latin America?

Yes, it is. I think it's rather anachronic now, since I don't hear it much anymore, but it used to be quite common a few years ago.

- Este pobre Luis ya perdió la chaveta/se volvió loco.
- Antes, en esa casa tenían un perro, pero luego se deschavetaron/enloquecieron y ya tienen doce.
- Las autoridades perdieron la chaveta/enloquecieron cuando llegó la epidemia.
- Desde que empecé decir que la tierra es plana me tildan de deschavetada/loca.
- La alcaldesa tiene muchos amigos. Le van a aprobar cualquier proyecto, por deschavetado/loco que sea.
