Are there errors in this?

There are errors. Parts of this look like word-for-word translations like from a dictionary or worse, a computerized translator. En aquel entonces is . Some other things are OK, but there's mistakes. I understand you.

Instead of 'Escogí el español', try 'I decided to take Spanish'.
Replace 'mi' with a definite article. You've already established yourself as the subject, so there's no need for the redundant possessive adjective.
a little by chance = un poco por casualidad

'En aquel entonces' is perfectly good Spanish.
apenas saber de algo

Instead of 'las lenguas', use 'los idiomas'.

... de haber hecho esa decisión.

I believe your last sentence would sound less awkward if you just say that 'knowing Spanish opens up more opportunities for you'.

Muchas gracias, Sr. Rusty, por sus comentarios constructivos!

poli, aunque hay algunos errores en mi texto, lo escribí por mi mismo, NO copiando el diccionario palabra por palabra. Es mi propio trabajo :/
