Question Pluscuamperfecto or imperfecto? HELP

I've got a question about that sentence :

1) Cuando volvió a su pueblo su mujer y sus hijos ya habían estado muertos por una bomba que había caído ahí.

2)Cuando volvió a su pueblo su mujer y sus hijos ya estaban muertos por una bomba que había caído ahí.

Im wondering which form is correct? Ive always thought that the best would be "había estado muertos" in my opinion....but well, i cant explain it to myself well...so i would be greatful if someone could explain it to me well.

I would use the first if there were a frequency or time adverb. Otherwise, it sounds better to just state that they were already dead.

Yes, I would use the second option because, it sound more correct and more well wrote, then if you find a Why? I can telling you, what the second chose sound better because the spelling is better at Spanish at least at my Spanish, I have understood, I must use the second chose not the first chose.

thanks, but anyway..i still have doubts....so what about that sentence " Sacó la pistola y se había matado antes la policía llegó" so what about that one? can i use here "había matado"? or better is to use "mató " ? i understood that this Pluscuamperfecto i should use if one situation has happened before an other.

No, you must use the Saco la pistola y ya se habia matado antes de que llegara la policia.

It sound better.

i dont get it...i have a book here which tells me that Pluscuamperfecto is used to expres situations already ended , which happened before an other situation in the past...if thats the rule...that what i wrote ...Cuando volvió a su pueblo su mujer y sus hijos ya habían estado muertos por una bomba que había caído ahí. ...should be correct 8S
