Ésta & esté
I have these 2 statements
Aquí está la estación. Ésta es la plaza mayor. The accented letter is in a different position. |

The second sentence begins with the demonstrative adjective 'this'. The accent mark isn't required anymore on that word, but you'll still see it being used.
The first sentence contains the word 'is' (está is the third-person conjugation of the verb estar). The accent mark is always required. |

As Rusty said, "ésta"/"éste" are not related in any way to "está"/"esté".
Please note that written accents in Spanish not only determine how a word is pronounced, but they can also change what the words mean.

Thanks for that. I was informed by someone who had A level Spanish that An accent only changes the way a letter is pronounced. But this is clearly not so Thanks again for your help.
I try to loo more deeply into a sentence. as in a pervious post Ese es el ayuntamiento. [Ser] Allí está la catedral. [Esta] A Spanish child would know the difference of direction and describing something in giving a direction. Thinking from a Spanish child perspective would help. |
