Desgranaban los primeros días del verano de 1945 y caminábamos por las calles de una Barcelona atrapada bajo cielos de ceniza y un sol de vapor que se derramaba sobre la Rambla de Santa Mónica en una guirnalda de cobre líquido. This is metaphor. All the days of summer, considered as a whole, were passing by (crumbling away, ticking by (as can be said for the hours of a day)) one by one.

Because it's taking how the weather makes you perceive the city as if you were in an alternative version of it.
It would be the same in English: - Cuando regresé a la ciudad, era un Chicago diferente del que yo recordaba. When I came back to the city, it was a different Chicago than the one I remembered. - Nos perdimos en Candem y déjame decirte que es un Londres que nunca ponen en los folletos para turistas. We got lost in Candem and let me tell you that this is a London never depicted in the tourist brochures. - Ciudad Gótica es una Nueva York muy tétrica, pero Metrópolis es una Nueva York luminosa y con cielos azules. Gotham City is a gloomy New York, but Metropolis is a bright and blue-skied New York.
