This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for April 7, 2009
escudo (masculine noun (el)) — shield. Look up escudo in the dictionary En muchas culturas, los guerreros usaban un escudo para protegerse en batalla. Warriors in many cultures used shields to protect themselves in battle.

It can also mean a seal. It is also the term for a Portuguese monetary unit
prior to the euro. Incidentally seal is precinto in Spain, but precinto it may not mean seal in Latin America. It's a false cognate for English speakers who may assume that it means police station (precinct).

Escudo fué la unidad monetaria en chile en los años sesentas.
Me parece que precinto en español sería el hecho de usar cinta para salvaguardar un documento, el cual obviamente va sellado con lacre, y se usa un sello (molde). O sea, que cuando uno se refiere a precintar, se supone que va con cinta y sellado. Lo contrario sería sellar una carta, para lo cual se usa lacre y un sello. Y tambien concuerdo con lo que dijo Sosia. |
