How do you express the idea of "picking someone up by car" in Spanish? Does recoger make sense here?

I would say "ir a buscar (a alguien) con el auto" or "ir en auto a buscar (a alguien)".
buscarla/buscarlo/buscarlas/buscarlos.

"Recoger a alguien (con/en el coche)" is the most often heard in Mexico; also, "pasar por alguien".
- Pasé a recoger a los niños a la escuela. - Tengo que ir a recoger a Juan al aeropuerto. - ¿Puedes pasar por mí a las ocho? - Paso por ti a las nueve.

Hello - I'm back again. Your answers don't quite fit the case where the pick-up is not planned. If I am driving home to the village and I see a neighbour walking, I pick him/her up, i.e. I give him/her a lift. How do you say to somebody "Would you like a lift"?

¿Te llevo (a algún lugar)?
¿Quieres que te lleve (a algún lugar)? (Colloquial to most of Central America: ¿Te doy un aventón?) |

Quote:
"Suba que lo llevo" (if there's an only/obivious destination) "Voy para XX. Si va de camino, lo llevo." so it doesn't seem to be something offered just because the other person noticed you before you could flee.

Perikles! Welcome back!
In daily speech in Mexico, we say "darle un aventón a alguien". Yet, "recoger a alguien" also works for the situation you described.
