¿Distinto o diferente?

Al oir hispanohablantes me parece que haya una diferencia entre el
significado de 'distinto' y 'diferente'.
¿Tienen matices diferentes esas palabras? Si es así, me gustaría
ver unos ejemplos de como selas usan.

Vale, parece que no son precisamente lo mismo, aunque muchas veces no importaría
cual se pone; muchas veces sería cuestion de enfasis: Por ejemplo,
"Este hongo me parece diferente, es más blanco." pero
"Si, es de una especie distinta."

y aún así se pueden usar indistintamente.

Mi vida es diferente a la tuya.

My life is distinct to your life.

Mi vida es distinta a tu vida.

Aparte de algún matiz mínimo (como los mencionados en el Tesauro del enlace anterior), no consigo ver gran diferencia entre ambas palabras. Prácticamante son sinónimos. Eso sí, sus derivados sí pueden tener connotaciones especiales. Por ejemplo, una persona "indiferente" no es una persona "indistinta".
