Si usar 'distinto' o 'diferente' creo que dependa del contexto.
"En diferentes oportunidades me ha tocado de verlos distintos".
" En distintas oportunidades me ha tocado de verlos diferentes"

I'm not sure if "de" is correct there, but it definitely sounds ugly for me.

For me they are synonyms, in all circunstances. There are sentences where is a lot more common to use one, but both can be use. (at least in the examples I have tried in my mind)

Ese 'de' es una contaminación italiana. Vivo en Italia desde hace mucho tiempo y a menudo confundo las estructuras de las frases.
Creo que me inscribiré a un foro de castellano.
Pido disculpas a quienes se han sentido mal y ofendidos por ese 'de' .
Debe ser terrible tener que soportar algo así: "but it definitely sounds ugly for me".

At least it sound bad.

You can use this choice.

En diferentes oportunidades me ha tocado verlos.

You should to remove the word de. It's more accurate in Spanish.

¿Ofendido? Para nada, solo dije que sonaba feo para mi por no decir que me parecía incorrecto, porque no estaba seguro. No es terrible en absoluto y menos en un foro de este estilo.
