How could I say the idiom "y así le fue" in English?
It means "all went wrong" or "the outcome was the opposite" or any way to say it. Presumably "así" is an euphemism for something stronger. Example: Napoleón creyó que iba a conquistar Rusia en un periquete, y así le fue.

Can't say that I've heard it before nor that I would deduce that it means the opposite. -boy did he get it -boy was he wrong

Yes, I found examples from Spain, Argentina and Uruguay. The intonation of "y así les fue" is like you are pointing at the consequences, and it's always used to highlight adverse consequences better than opposite ones. Creyó que iba a ganar millones y así le fue [Es pobre] Pese a que le advirtieron, zarpó en medio de la tormenta y así le fue [Su barco se fue a pique] Así le fue por no hacer caso.
