To tell someone off.

(Pre-empt: there is a transitive verb "to call to order", but that has the sense of asking for quiet in a noisy meeting).

I misunderstood. The por decir thus means because I said to the staff, not the boss.

Does this construction always refer to the last person mentioned? EL jefe me llamó.... thus por decir refers to me?

I think a wake-up call might be a good translation for this term.

I have been told off for announcing a pay increase to the others without permission.

sometimes "to straighten someone out" will work.

ex: "i was out of line, and the boss straightened me out."
