Popular

This word has false cognates that confuses me. Un barrio popular would translate a popular neighborhood in English as some place that attracts visitors.
I don't think it works that way in Spanish. Could someone explain its meaning in Spanish?

Without a context, I'd expect "barrio popular" would mean a working class district, an area where the majority of people has a medium to lower income.

José José was from la colonia popular Clavería. I assume your guess is right. I means working class in this context.

Indeed. I don't know now, because Mexico City's districts have changed a lot over the years, but Clavería used to be an area of middle class and lower middle class.
