"telling Mary what to sing"

Tienes razón. El indicativo señala que María de hecho está cantando sin importar el deseo de los poderosos; cuando se usa el subjuntivo, si ella decide cantar, el deseo de los poderosos no cambiará el canto de María.

Ahora bien, mi problema es "lo que"; con esta construcción, no me suena bien el subjuntivo, por eso lo cambié por "qué".

Gracias de nuevo por tu ayuda, AdA. Este debate me ha animado explorar más sobre este punto, el que la RAE denomina "deslizamiento de sentido". Es un hueso nuevo que puedo roer por las fiestas. Les agradezco a las dos, Queli y AdA, el hilo.
