From context, I think it means to be astonished or agasp, but I'm really not sure

The whole context, as always, would help to give the right explanations, but "al vacío" can mean the bottom of a very high place.

"Tirar/aventar/arrojar algo al vacío" means to throw something to a deep fall.

At the cliff, I threw a stone to the void (?) and it took several seconds before it reached the bottom.

There is also:

- caer(se) al vacío = to fall from a big height.
- tirarse/arrojarse/aventarse al vacío = to commit suicide by throwing oneself from a high place.

It would mean to shoot to the void, literally and without anymore context.

Shoot or throw?
