Slums are privately owned (or abandoned by their owners) homes or apartments in terrible disrepair.
I believe the equivalent to colectivos are housing projects. Housing projects are usually owned and maintained by the municipality to house those people of such little means that they have not been able to afford a domicile.

Ok, I didn't even connect the fact that colectivos could = housing projects.

Now I understand better how she termed it.

Pero un colectivo es un grupo de gente, agrupados en una asociación o no, es decir, unas personas que tienen algo en común; en este caso concreto, es un grupo de personas que tienen algún tipo de problema (social, económico, edad, desempleo, etc.), no es un barrio.

Here we call them "grupos vulnerables" or "poblaciones vulnerables".

In some international organisations I've found "vulnerable populations" or "special needs populations". These terms refer to groups whose needs aren't always efficiently addressed by usual governmental services. These groups include handicapped people, some ethnic groups, homeless, elderly people, children, substance-addicts, etc.

Nunca habia yo escuchado colectivo medico, por ej., pero si:

La colectividad medica, o la colectividad menos agraciada o de pocos recursos economicos etc...

recien se me abrio el mate, maceta, coco, (cabeza)



cuesta, pero aprendo, ¿no?

¿La colectividad médica no sería más bien la de los batas-blancas? Ésos no son un grupo muy vulnerable que digamos.

Pero colectividades con necesidades médicas hay montones.

Colectivo en el modo que usas no traduce bien al inglés.
Se puede usar population.
example:The city's elderly population will require...
The population of disabled people has increased to...
The number of chronic substance abusers has decreased to..

La palabra colectivo parece community/population

Hay situaciones en que no tiene que usar population,

En inglés se puede decir: the blind, the rich, the needy, the intelligencia, the poor, the mentally retarded, t

la colectividad estudiantil etc etc


significando grupo

nunca como "el colectivo"

Aunque suena un poco artificial, "colectividad" sí se usa así, sobre todo en los medios. Pero no podía perder la oportunidad de incordiar un poco con el tema de los desfavorecidos.
