Luna

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 25, 2008

luna - feminine noun (la) - moon. Look up luna in the dictionary

Me encanta salir a dar un paseo a la luz de la luna.
I love a stroll in the moonlight.

Luna is a pretty common name in Denmark. Does anyone know if it is common in other places as well?

One of my favourite students of all times is named Luna.
The name in itself may not be as common as Ana, María..., but I know a few people called Luna here in Spain.

I've never met anyone named Luna. I assume in both Spain and Denmark it's a woman's name?

It is, yes. I've met quite a few people named Luna, but it wouldn't make it to a top-500 of common Danish names, though.

In fact, I think it was the very famous children series, Bamse og Kylling (Teddy and Chicken), which made the name popular. One of the characters in the series is named Luna. She's a good friend of both Bamse and Kylling. This talk wakes memories from when I was a child.

According to a U.S. census site, Luna is ranked 2859th out of 4275 female first names. So, it's not entirely unheard of. I've not personally heard it used myself.

Mary is the most popular female first name in the United States. And, for our beloved pelota, Maria is in seventh place.

Thanks for that one. You made me smile. And, you can start calling me Mary...(j/k).
The only Luna 'I know' lives in a book and in a multimillion-film deal: Luna Lovegood, the rather peculiar student in the Harry Potter series.
