Cinco de Mayo

Donde vivo Cinco de Mayo es un razón de celebrar. Todos los restaurantes méxicanos tienen fiestas. En general, este dia tiene mucha publicidad por negocios méxicanos. Sé que Cinco de Mayo celebra una batalla en Puebla en que los franceces perdieron. Sorpsecho que en México 5 de Mayo no es una gran celebración,y aquí lo celebre para vender margaritas y Coronas, pero no estoy seguro. Sé que Cinco de Mayo es una calle principal en DF.

¿Que opinen vds?

Hola y ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo a todos!

En mi opinión esta fecha se celebra más en EEUU que en México. En México se celebra más que nada en la ciudad de Puebla, [en el estado de Puebla] porque como dice Poli, allí es donde los mexicanos derrotaron a los franceses que iban marchando camino a Ciudad de México. En México se celebra "La batalla de Puebla" y (sólo) en EEUU se conoce como "Cinco de Mayo".

Todos en EEUU conocen el "Cinco de Mayo" pero generalmente desconocen la razón de la celebración.

I think it's quite revealing how Yahoo doesn't mention Cinco de Mayo on their Mexican homepage, but it gets a prominent animated graphic on the US homepage.

Pues yo no sabía nada del Cinco de mayo. Acabamos de pasar el puente de mayo. El día uno por la fiesta del trabajo, y el día dos porque España empezó la Guerra de la Independencia contra los franceses (contra Napoleón, 1808). Definitivamente, mayo no fue un buen mes para Francia. Otra fiesta no nos vendría nada mal.

I have always wondered why in the USA some people believe the 5th of May it's Mexico's celebration of Independence (which is actually on September 16th). What we celebrate is a victory in 1862 over the French army, when they invaded our territory (the effects of this battle didn't last long, but in the end the French did go away).
It used to be an official holiday, but a few years ago, they made it disappear from our calendar.

I just found this article with history on this date as a celebration for Mexican culture, so I thought it was worth sharing:

Clarify the May 5th in Mexico is celebrated for the battle between the Mexican soldiers in those old times with the French soldier, than we won in that time.

I'm proud for the valour of the Mexican in those times.
