To live by

I'd like to know the meaning of "to live by" in the following sentence:

... human beings that capture one truth from life and live by it in utter isolation.

¿Viven con ella?, ¿viven de ella?

Thanks

To live by something means to live in a particular fashion according to it, as a kind of philosophy, so it is possibly an elliptical expression.

For example: he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

Living by the sword means adopting a lifestyle where violence is acceptable. Sword in this case is synecdoche for violence in general.

In your case, living by one truth is presumably adopting this truth, and only this truth, as a general philosophy

Does this help?
