Se esperaba que el descubrimiento de Watson se brindaría desinteresadamente para mayor beneficio de la humanidad

One hoped that the discovery of Watson would toast/pledge/support unselfishly to the greater good/benefit of humanity

Most English speakers with good vocabularies avoid the word disinterested for fear of being misconstrued. Most people think it means uninterested.

nice responses, all - it's true, i avoid "disinterested" unless i know i'll
be understood clearly.
