pretender (verb) — to claim, try, seek, endeavor, aspire to, court. Look up pretender in the dictionary

Ella pretende ser rica.
She claims to be rich.

¿Qué pretendes decir con eso?
What do you mean by that?

El pretende que el vecino vino y mató a su perro.
He alleges that the neighbor came and killed his dog.

Can pretender be used for ANY claim? Or only to imply a false or misleading claim? Can someone say "Lou Ann prentende ser profesora. No puedo probarlo, pero no tengo ninguna razón para dudarla." ??

Casi siempre veo "pretende" en el contexto de las ideas políticas - "Zapatero pretende planificar la política energética hasta 2030", "Rajoy pretende colocar al PP como una sólida alternativa al Gobierno" - así que el sentido de "aspire to" es el que entiendo sin el contexto no lo contradiga.

Por eso en vez de la frase de Laepelba diría "Lou Ann se dice ser profesora..."

Bob, "gane", subjuntivo. Y parece más idiomático decirlo en negativo, y con un verbo distinto: "hasta que no me toque la lotería, soy pobre".
