The only one I am sure about "estoy "a punto de" ducharme. But is there any rules to which one to use in which situations?

Estoy leyendo un libro sobre carros... verdad?
Estamos hablando de carros... verdad?

"Tratar de", "tratar acerca de" and "tratar sobre" are synonyms most of the times. "Tratar acerca de" sounds a little more "refined" though.

Este libro trata de un hombre que viaja por Michigan.
Este libro trata sobre un hombre que viaja por Michigan.
Este libro trata acerca de un hombre que viaja por Michigan.

Estoy leyendo un libro sobre carros.
Estoy leyendo un libro de carros.
Estoy leyendo un libro acerca de automóviles. (The word here changed because "carros" is more colloquial, so it doesn't fit with "acerca de")

Estamos hablando de carros.
Estamos hablando sobre carros.

"Hablar acerca de" is more formal, so one would rather expect a topic instead of an object.

El profesor habló acerca de la filosofía de Kant. (The professor talked about Kant's philosophy.)
But it can also be said like:
El profesor habló de la filosofía de Kant.
El profesor habló sobre la filosofía de Kant.

Estuvimos hablando acerca de la educación de nuestros hijos. (We have been talking about our children's education.)
Can also be:
Estuvimos hablando sobre la educación de nuestros hijos.
Estuvimos hablando de la educación de nuestros hijos.


Los doctores vinieron a la escuela a hablarnos acerca del SIDA. (Doctors came to school to tell us about AIDS.)
Can also be:
Los doctores vinieron a la escuela a hablarnos del SIDA.
Los doctores vinieron a la escuela a hablarnos sobre el SIDA.

Thank you, Malila - this is exactly what I was getting at in my question on the other thread. Your examples are always extremely helpful. I have always found myself stopped dead in the middle of a sentence because I don't know if "sobre" is as all-encompassing as I've tried to make it. Apparently, I have used it correctly. (Yay!)

I'd say the same without "se":

Este libro trata de... (la Edad Media, Pintura moderna, etc.)

En este libro se tratan... (asuntos importantes, diferentes perspectivas filosóficas, etc.)

En Chile también se usa decir: El libro se trata de...

"Tratarse de" is more colloquial and I think more Latin American, and it means more or less the same.
