This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 11, 2008

abogado - masculine noun (el), attorney, lawyer. Look up abogado in the dictionary

Los abogados son caros pero a veces necesarios.
Lawyers are expensive, but sometimes necessary.

Nunca tenía mucha necesidad de buscar un abogado, pero cuando
compré una casa, alguien me recomendó un abogado que me atendió muy
bien y no cobró un precio miedoso.

Palabras despectivos para abogado en inglés: shark, sheister, ambulance
chaser y estoy seguro que hay mas. Imagino que son asi amados en otros partes del mundo.

¿Existen palabras españoles despectivos para abogados?

which brings me to my question.......

En México hay Licenciados y Abogados.....creo no son la misma cosa pero me gustaría saber cual es la diferencia.

In México a licenciado is simply someone with a college degree (licenciatura) and for some reason they want acknowledgment of this fact. You even address them as licenciado so-and-so.

So to answer your question, an abogado is also a licenciado, but a licenciado isn't necessarily an abogado.

you have two levels: diplomado (usually 2 or 3 years) and licenciado (usually 4 years).
In some technical studies (engineers) you can't say "licenciado en ingeniería de montes", you must say "ingeniero de montes"

Elaina me parece que en México, se usa licenciado cuando se refiere a un abogado como aquí decimos doctor cuando hablamos de los médicos.
Es claro que doctor es un nivel de educación en muchos campos (que incluye el estudio de la ley)no solo medicina y sin embargo pensamos médico cuando oimos doctor.
