Cómo habla la gente realmente

Una oración muy común en inglés es:

"It has been almost 20 years since I was home."

In these sentences it's never "he", because the first subject is "20 años", so the verb must be "han".

-Han pasado casi 20 años desde que estuve (The imperfect is used when you are using an action as a time frame, but here the frame is set by "han pasado", so the preterite is more appropriate) en casa. (Microsoft)
(SDL)

As for:

"Ser a casa" doesn't make any sense. Neither does "estar a casa". "A casa" is used with verbs that imply movement towards home, like "ir a casa" or "regresar a casa".

Also, "han sido 20 años" is not necessarily wrong, but it sounds weird. Personally, I prefer this kind of construction if you're going to describe what these years have been like. For example:

"Han estado" is definitely wrong here. The only way you can have "han estado 20 años" in a sentence, is when the "ellos" implicit in "han" are not the 20 years. For example:

Probably the most common way to say it would be:

Otra vez gracias Angelica.

Another common way to express this, that I don't think Angélica mencionó es:

It has been almost 20 years since I was home.

The use of "tener" in this case might be non-standard, and it's probably not used in all areas either. I'm not sure.

Right, David.
I think it's a colloquial way to say it, but it's pretty common and I think everyone would understand.

I would say, han pasado 20 años desde la última vez que estaba en mi casa. Does that sound like sensible Spanish?

Yes, it does, Poli, only with "estuve" instead of "estaba".
"Estaba" would be needed if you didn't have a time framework, but "la última vez" works like a specific date, so "estuve" is better.

Yo he estudiado inglés desde hace unos treinta años y todavía cometo muchos errores.
