Sobar falls into the world of slang and can mean other things in various countries. ¡Ojo!
I would think frotar is generally accepted as to rub and masajear is the more precise (or more technical) word for to massage.

...in Spain, for example

In spain the meaning of "sobar" is something like "to touch somebody without permission with sexual intention" Mi hermana llegó a casa muy enfadada porque un tipo la sobó en el metro. Es despreciable que un médico aproveche un chequeo para sobar a sus pacientes.

Sóbame
is a verbal form that I think is not very used, so sobar has the meaning of unagreement of the touched person.

Masajear will work better as to massage. Frotar o dar friegas, también

As Bolboreta said, "sobar" is a bit coarse word in Spain. It's used also meaning "sleep" and "handled" in slang:

Estaba sobando cuando me llamó por teléfono.
No compres ese libro de segunda mano, está muy sobado.

La primera está genial saberla.

La segunda la usamos exactamente igual.
