Nieto

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for November 20, 2009

nieto (masculine noun (el)) — grandson, grandchild. Look up nieto in the dictionary

Mis nietos son unos niños bien lindos.
My grandchildren are really cute kids.

Estoy muy triste porque no tengo nietos. Pero me encantan mucho mis tres sobrinos. Son los hijos de mi hermano mayor, y son los únicos nietos de mi mamá.

(Would "les quiero" be better for humans than "me encantan"?)

You can say "encantar" for humans, too:

Me encantan tus hijos, son preciosos.
Me encanta mi marido, siempre tiene una sonrisa para mí.
Me encanta mi madre, es única.

No es lo mismo encantar que querer. Encantar equivale más a gustar y querer es amar. Encantar es gustar mucho:

A mí me encantan los perros, pero sólo quiero a mi perra.

@Lou Ann: "me encantan mucho" doesn't sound good. "Encantar" has the rank of a superlative, so "mucho" makes it an excessive statement. "Me encantan mis sobrinos" will be clear enough.
