With this new information, I'd go with "internamiento involuntario por protección".

By counting Google hits, "internamiento involuntario" is the most common of the given options:

"internamiento involuntario" 9,900
"internamiento obligatorio" 1,150
"hospitalización involuntaria" 714
"hospitalización obligatoria" 197

When a person is in protective placement, that person cannot sign themselves out of the hospital or discharge themselves. So the hospitalization is against their will.

Would I still use.......internamiento involuntario?

Gracias de antemano!

Yes. That's the objective of those ways of hospital admissions. Someone in the family will be responsible for the paperwork authorising the patient's treatment. The formal term will be defined both by the local laws and the hospital vocabulary, but I think any of those will be well understood if you're not translating an official document.

So, in this case, it would be: " Internamiento Protectivo"

This term was great. Thanks Elaina and everyone involved! It really made my day.

slowly I am reading all the threads.
I came today to this. Sorry Elaina
I would use here "internamiento preventivo", but I'm not an expert. Can also be used for a prisoner.
The "preventivo" here means the judge/doctor make it in order to avoid posible future problems, in both ways (the patient/prisoner to himself or to others)
Saludos
