Lightbulb Chulo

Los madrileños son muy chulos.
What´s the meaning of chulos in English?

This is what the OD says for the adjective

B (España familiar) (bravucón) nervy (inglés norteamericano familiar), smart (inglés norteamericano familiar), mouthy (inglés norteamericano familiar), cocky (inglés británico familiar), cheeky (inglés británico familiar); no te me pongas chulo don't get nervy o cocky with me (familiar)
C (España) (satisfecho, garboso): ¡mira qué chula va con su vestido nuevo! doesn't she look pretty parading around in her new dress!

and for the noun

chulo2-la masculino,femenino
A (madrileño castizo) traditional working-class figure from certain areas of Madrid
B (España familiar) (bravucón) flashy type, flash harry (inglés británico familiar)

¿Quieres decir "show-off"? Me parece funcionar también.

In Latin America, at least in my country of origin, "chulo" has a negative connotation. It's actually a "pimp".

In the Caribbean where I first heard the word it's pretty much all of the above and also romantic, good romancer (not sure about "pimp")...

I guess we're not so mistaken in my country. Look what the "Drae" shows as one of the meanings for the word "chulo":

8. m. rufián (‖ hombre que trafica con mujeres públicas).

I think this is a very interesting thread..

"Un chulo" is certainly a pimp in many places, but in Mexico "ser (muy) chulo/chula" means someone is good-looking.

Elaina will become famous soon enough
Then you have "papi chulo"... he lives off of women... not like a plain old "chulo" ... "papi chulo" is not a pimp....he is just supported by women who love him and will fight over him....
