¡Increíblemente, otra pregunta sobre el subjuntivo!

Hola,
Sé que las frases que empiezan con "una vez que..." generalmente usan el subjuntivo, por ejemplo:

"Una vez que los estudiantes vayan a la cafetería podriamos irnos" porque es una conjectura sobre un acción que todavía no habia ocurrido.

Pero en el caso de los eventos que habia terminado no sé si sea verdad:

En inglés, por ejemplo, podriamos decir:

"Once he had gone into the store there was no need to continue surveillance"

"Una vez que [algun conjugación] la tienda no fue necesario de continuar la vigilancia"

Pero es un hecho en el pasado y aunque se usa "una vez que" no creo que debería usar el subjuntivo.

Gracias por algunos pensamientos

Ben

"Una vez que los estudiantes se hayan ido a la cafetería, podremos irnos" (posibility) or "... podríamos irnos" (suggestion; thinking aloud)

it's not a real action, but an action happening within that strange realm called "future", that is, outside the context the phrase is said---> example: "ocurrió antes de que llegara" ("llegar" is not a part of that reality where that thing "ocurrió")

"Una vez que los estudiantes entraron a la tienda ya no fue necesario seguir vigilándolos"

it's a real action happened within the realm called "reality". ---> example: "ocurrió después de que llegó" ("llegar" is part of the reality where that thing "ocurrió")

Beware the temptation of always trying to find a logical reason for the subjunctive. I have just read

Quote:
Elizabeth tuvo la inesperada dicha de que sus tíos la invitasen a acompañarlos en un viaje que pensaban emprender en el verano.

Imagine that as a subdued verb, or better, as a lively noun.

One thing that baffles English speakers is using indicative to introduce new information:

Me preocupa que lo acaban de despedir (new information)
Me preocupa que lo despidieran (known information)

In a sentence like "me preocupa que lo despidieran" we native speakers know that either who's saying it thinks that information is known or he is highlighting his feelings above the triggering fact itself. In everyday dialogues everything becomes quickly clear:

A - Me preocupa que lo despieran
B - ¡Cómo que lo despidieran! (or "¿Cómo?¿Lo despidieron?")
A - Claro ¿no sabías? Lo despidieron ayer
B - Cuéntame por qué fue (meaning "give me the facts; I'm not interested in your worries")

This being said, we can analyse the sentence from two perspectives:

When we read "Elizabeth tuvo la inesperada dicha de que sus tíos la invitasen a acompañarlos en un viaje que pensaban emprender en el verano", the fact that she was invited is a new one to us, but not to the character. Indeed, we come to know that fact through Elizabeth's reaction -it looks a typical novel- and also got to know that way it was a completely unexpected development.

On the other hand the sentence is designed in a way "que la invitasen a acompañarlos" is just a "thingy", the thingy that triggers that surprise, so "to be surprised" is the main action in the sentence and to be invited is just the action-thing referred.

Both interpretations are equally valid and they don't oppose each other. In fact, both are one and the same from a native subjunctive point of view.

A - Me preocupa que lo despidieran [subj imp]
B - ¡Cómo que lo despidieran! [subj imp](or "¿Cómo?¿Lo despidieron?" [ind pret] )
A - Claro ¿no sabías? Lo despidieron ayer [ind pret]
B - Cuéntame por qué fue [ind pret](meaning "give me the facts; I'm not interested in your worries")
Una pequeña corrección (despieran --> despidieran) ¿verdad?
Para aclarar sus pensamientos noté las formas de los verbos:
subj imp = subjuntivo imperfecto; ind pret = indicativo preterito

Gracias

It's the verb and interrogative adverb choice. B just decides to know about the main fact.

Additionally, A doesn't think necessary that he's talking about a known fact. He talks in a way that the fact is shown in a subdued way so his worries jump in front of the footlights.

It's important to say that indicative+subjunctive is the default for that kind of sentences and indicative+indicative is the exception, because the speakers deliberately declare the fact using indicative because they know or think it to be unknown:

Me preocupa que lo despidieran.
Me duele que lo ignoren.
Me hace reir que se burlen de él.
Le impresionó que se fueran de repente.
Que proteste nos es indiferente.

which have the common structure of some psychological activity as a consequence of another activity -psychological or not-. The commented activity is subdued using subjunctive so the main activity, by keeping indicative, can be "real". How come all this things become that silly "subjunctive when speaking of feelings" -mein Gott!- I can't fathom it, as it looks to me like some short-cut found in some CliffNotes or a way to cheat in exams and get a C+, besides the obvious of "feelings" being communicated by using indicative.

Si yo diga, por ejemplo:

Quote:
