Peor es chile y agua lejos

Peor es chile y agua lejos

Knowing this means things could be worse, I've always wondered whether it's literally true. Shouldn't it say a piece of bread instead, because water only makes the burning more intense?

Water is the usual "cure" for the burning sensation of hot chili. The other usual remedy is salt, but Poli is right: avocado or butter are better.

The saying, however, keeps the water.
