¿A dónde vas? - ¿Dónde vas?

¿A dónde vas? - ¿Dónde vas?
  1. Which one is right?
  2. Which one do you use?
  3. Do you use both?
  4. When do you use either one?
  5. Would your answers be any different if the phrases were "¿a dónde estás?" and "¿dónde estás?"
Discuss.

I would say "¿A dónde vas?" meant where are you going to =(whither) ...motion towards
and "¿Dónde estas?" where are you? ........ no preposition, no direction, static situation.

The preposition a must precede dónde when ir is the verb. This is because ir always takes a preposition.
It's not used in "¿Dónde estas?"

From a mere Mexican:

1-4. Both are right, but it depends on what you want to ask. If you're asking about destination, "where are you going?" should be "¿A dónde vas?". If you want to know at which part of the road (supposing you already know destination) the person is, "¿dónde vas?" would be correct.

Vi que Juan se llevó su coche ¿a dónde va?

--Oye, los estamos esperando. ¿Dónde van?
--Ya casi llegamos. Vamos por la Glorieta del Ángel.

5. Although it's widely used, "¿a dónde estás?" doesn't sound correct to me. "¿Dónde estás?" is much better.

--¿No puedes venir por mí? ¿Pues dónde estás?
--Estoy en el taller. El coche se descompuso.

I use the first one and I use the first one.

Later I can give you more choices.

Ok, I came back.

I went just to buy my food to the store.

Well, basically I use the word Where do you go?

Donde vas, but this choice is used in different sentences for instance.

Where do you go today?

Donde vas hoy.

There are others usages for that word. But the more commonly is the that I mentioned before.

Where do you go to night?

A donde vas esta noche.

The rule of this choices is simple because, they mean the same and they are like together, but you decide which one use during a sentence, you can use either two choices.

If you are in a situation that you need to use the first one, therefore it will works.

For instance.

A donde fue el perro

Donde fue el perro

In those examples el mean is same, because they mean the idea, Where did the dog go?

Others one.

A donde fue el maestro

Donde fue el maestro.

Where did the teacher go?

As you can see the mean is the same in both sentences.

Se puede escribir tanto "a donde" como "adonde" (acentuado en caso de interrogativas y exclamativas, evidentemente). Como apuntó Brute, a donde/adónde se utiliza con verbos de movimiento. Sin embargo, donde/dónde puede sustituir perfectamente el adverbio unido con su preposición. No es así al contrario:

¿Dónde vas? = ¿A dónde (Adónde) vas?
Se han marchado adonde (adonde) han querido = Se han marchado donde han querido

¿Dónde has estado? ¿A dónde has estado?

Os copio un enlace donde lo explica muy bien y de forma muy escueta (sexta posición). Esta página está muy bien para dudas.
