This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 15, 2008
grito - masculine noun (el) - shout, cry, roar, scream. Look up grito in the dictionary Cuando le dije cuánto costó, puso el grito en el cielo. When I told him how much it cost he really hit the ceiling.

Sí. El grito de Dolores fue cuando el cura Miguel Hidalgo llamó a la gente a levantarse contra la opresión de los virreyes, y fue lo que inició la guerra de la independencia de México. Cada 15 de Septiembre el presidente toca una campana y grita ¡Viva México! para conmemorarlo.
