Echar el cierre

Echar el cierre

I think this means to give up or figuratively throw in the towel. Am I right?

Sorry, I can't find a lot of metaphorical meaning in the way we use the idiom here in Spain, echar el cierre is to lock up a smal business as you leave every day, metaphorically it may refer to a career shift, such as:

Hemos echado el cierre a comerciar con Asia, ahora solo trabajamos con America

"Echar el cierre"
respondo en español porque hoy tengo mucho que leer.
Las casas antiguas en España tienen un cierre (cerrojo), normalmente grande y pesado, que impedía que las puertas se abriesen desde fuera.
En sentido normal "echar el cierre", es cerrar la tienda/negocio porque te vas a casa a dormir/comer, etc. como indica Hopper.
En sentido figurado, es cuando quieres acabar algo "Seguimos jugando a la Wii o echamos el cierre?" e incluso "echar el cierre" es cuando cierras definitivamente una fábrica/negocio.

"tirar la toalla" es abandonar un empeño, una ilusión, un proyecto.
En principio no son iguales. Si que pueden significar lo mismo si lo que cierras/acabas es una ilusión proyecto.
