Question Worst & best

I do not understand in which context the words peor and lejor are used. It seems that peor can be used as an adjective and adverb and used for both worse and worst. Alternatively, mejor also can be used as an adjective and adverb to translate better and best. Are there any rules for the use of these words or are other words "better" to use?

Worse: peor
Worst: pronoun + peor.
Better: mejor
Best: pronoun + mejor

E.g. Enrique es peor que Fernando, pero Juan es el peor.
Enrique es mejor que Juan, pero Fernando es el mejor.

In addition to what PJT33 already shared, both peor and mejor can be used as nouns.

Mi comida casera es la peor, la de mi madre es la mejor.
En cuanto a los equipos de béisbol de Norteamérica, Los Giants de San Francisco son el mejor. (Al menos, ahora mismo. )
Los vinos que mi amigo hace en su sótano son los peores que he probado, pero las cervezas que hace en su garaje, cosa rara, son las mejores que he tomado jamás.

One more thing: you can form a generic noun "the worst/best" by tacking on "lo" instead of "el", "los", "la", or "las".

Lo peor que puedo imaginar es que tendré que tomar los vinos de mi amigo para siempre.
Lo mejor sería si pudiera tomar sus cervezas cuando quisiera.
