"anginas" es mas vulgar pero de uso frecuente.
Ejemplos: Se operó de anginas (se usa pero es vulgar, poco culto)
Se operó de amígdalas (actualmente es habitual)

La laringe es otra cosa distinta

Estoy de acuerdo... (En mis tiempos se usaba "anginas" mucho más que amígdalas... pero desde que Mortadelo popularizó el píloro, el duodeno y el páncreas... estamos todos muy cultivados...)

Yes, that's true. I hear it a lot with somewhat comical purposes. Patas is sometimes used instead of pies, and hocico for mouth. I thought these words are more commonly used in Caribbean Spanish, but as JPablo indicates, it's used in Argentina too.
