Some time I called an embassy where the recording said "for information in English, press the numeral key", so I thought the name of the " # " sign would have to be related to "number".

Tic-tac-toe is a game with nine squares, usually drawn without the outside borders (just like the pound sign). The goal is to place three of your markers (usually either the letter X or the letter O) in a row - across, down, or vertically - before your opponent does. Most people grow tired of the game quickly because it frequently ends in a draw (known as 'cat'). A draw means that neither opponent wins. Here is an online version where the computer actually lets you win!

I was referring to calling tic-tac-toe a game of gato. In English, when the draw occurs while playing tic-tac-toe, we say 'cat' and we draw the letter 'C' over the top of the game. Then, we draw another grid (#) - gato - and have another go at it.

Veo que no se entiende el chiste. Hay un animal que es animal dos veces, no es el gato, es el escarabajo... ¿por qué? Porque es animal "cara abajo y cara arriba"

El gato es animal tres veces, pero es mejor contarlo en un diálogo, que sería cómo se cuenta el chiste:

- ¿Qué animal es animal tres veces?
- El gato.
- ¿Por qué?
- Porque es gato y araña
(pasa un tiempo mientras el segundo interlocutor piensa que sólo le ha dicho dos animales, entonces pregunta)
- Has dicho que es animal tres veces y sólo veo dos.
- ¿Nunca te han dado gato por liebre?

"Dar gato por liebre" significa "engañar". No sé muy bien cuál es el origen supongo que viene de la posguerra, cuando la gente no tenía casi nada para comer y servían gato haciéndolo pasar por conejo (la liebre y el conejo son similares). Al parecer el gato sin piel se parece al conejo. Yo no lo sé, no he visto ninguno ni quiero verlo.

Lo de la araña no es porque pique, sino porque es un animal también. En fin, son difíciles estos chistes en otro idioma.
