Hola a todos!

Necesito ayuda en este contexto:

"Si militas a disgusto es preferible que no milites. Bajo el franquismo podías militar a disgusto por una exigencia ética. Ahora no es necesario continuar con ese cilicio".

Mi duda está en la última frase. Sé que un cilicio era una vestidura de tela de saco o de otra clase, áspera, que se llevaba sobre la carne para mortificarse por penitencia. Pero acaso aquí se usa con sentido metafórico, ¿no?
