Desviar

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for January 6, 2010

desviar (verb) — to turn aside, divert, deflect, avert; desviarse - to leave, turn aside from, deviate. Look up desviar in the dictionary

Sigue este camino derecho sin desviarte y llegarás al pueblo.
Go straight ahead without leaving the road and you'll reach the town.

La conversación se desvió hacia otros temas.
The conversation turned to other things.

Tuve que desviarme de mi camino habitual para poder llegar hoy al trabajo.
I had to take a detour from my usual route in order to get to work today.

Voy a conducir sin desviarme al mar

Esto suena mejor
Voy a conducir hasta que venga al mar

@Bob: The order of words does change the meaning.

Voy a conducir sin desviarme al mar. = I will drive straight to my destination, without going to the sea.

But:

Voy a conducir al mar sin desviarme. = Voy a conducir hasta que venga llegue al mar. = I will drive straight to the sea.

Muchas gracias!

¿hay un nombre de este verbo?
There is a detour / bypass for the loop 101 becuase it´s under construction
Hay un desviación para la calle 101 porque están construyéndolo

Start yelling to create a diversion
Comenza gritar para empezar un desviación

Hay una desviación para* la calle 101 porque están construyéndolo**
*It depends on what you mean:
- "desviación en la calle 101" -> The street is closed and one cannot drive straight through it.
- "desviación para la calle 101" -> There is a detour that leads to 101st Street.

**It should be "construyéndola", not "construyéndolo", but in Spanish it would rather sound as if they're just building it, not repairing it. Sentence should sound better if you said "porque la están reparando"/"porque están reparándola".

Aquí veo más "Desvío" que "Desviación", pero será cuestión de preferencias regionales.

Correcto.

En Chile también se usa más devío. Desviación se usa más como en "sexual deviation"

Entonces la palabra en la que está interesado Bob, es "desvío", porque quiere aprender el español con los regionalismos ibéricos.

A los mexicanos nos gusta la originalidad en las desviaciones:
