Era difícil

Hola a todos:

¿En este caso se podría usar "era", por favor?

Era muy difícil continuar estudiando por el tiempo, pero sabían/supieron que tenían que seguir si querían sacar buena nota. Así que estuvieron estudiando hasta muy tarde.
