This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 11, 2009
trago (masculine noun (el)) — drink, mouthful, swallow. Look up trago in the dictionary Me eché un trago de agua y seguí caminando bajo el sol. I took a swig of water and kept on walking in the sun.

A bad experience can also be called "un trago amargo".
Juan acaba de divorciarse. Hay que esperar a que pase el trago amargo/el mal trago para poder invitarlo a una fiesta.

Es bueno saber que un mal trago or un trago amargo significa una mala
experiecia-- como un bitter pill to swallow en inglés. Tambien es bueno saber que un trago es una palabra que se usa para una bebida alcohólico (hecho con aguaridiente)

Ok. I honestly thought that aguardiente(firewater)is a generic word for
all distilled alcoholic beverages as well as that booze from Colombia. Is there a term for hard liquor which would include scotch, brandy, rum tequila, gin, vodlka, pisco .....?

Here, we using the word swig also to say, we drinking a delicious beer but, it also means a swig.
Estamos dandole unos tragos a la cerveza. We're drinking an swing to the beer. I don't know if my translation is right. But at least I made the intent.
