Normalmente se traduce por "por mucho que" (debidamente concordado). Se emplea el imperfecto indicativo para narrar un hecho real, o un imperfecto subjuntivo para relatar una suposición o para exaltar una acción del pasado (sirve para exagerar).

Por ejemplo, si en la última usa "empujaba" se refiere a una realidad que vivió durante un tiempo indefinido de tiempo: empujó varias veces.

Sin embargo, si utiliza "empujara/empujase" alude a esa realidad con el plus de que le costó muchísimo esfuerzo. Se entiende como: I pushed, I pushed, I pushed...
