Pecera

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 27, 2008

pecera -feminine noun (la), fishbowl, fishtank. Look up pecera in the dictionary

Una pecera es un recipiente que ocupas para poner peces. ¿Sabías que en la Ciudad de México una pecera es el autobús que te lleva dentro de la ciudad de un lugar a otro?
A fishtank is a container that you use to keep fish. Did you know that in Mexico City peceras are local buses that take you from one area to another?

According to one of my dictionaries, a pecero/pecera is also a member of the communist party.

Great! Incredible dictionary. Of course, from PCE, you can form the word pecero. But this is not really common. You just say comunista, or ... del partido comunista.

Creo que sólo usan pecera para referirse a un microbús en el D.F., Mexico.

Ésta es una pecera. (microbús, micro). Micro es una palabra interesante porque algunos mexicanos dicen la micro mientras otros dicen el micro.
