This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for November 23, 2009

girasol (masculine noun (el)) — sunflower. Look up girasol in the dictionary

Resulta que usa mucho el aceite de girasol en la cocina.
As it turns out she uses sunflower oil a lot in cooking.

In some areas, you can also use mirasol for sunflower.

Yo no. No sé si con la práctica resulta más fácil, pero me parece que el esfuerzo necesario para comerlas es tanto que no vale la pena.

No pienso que es esfuerzo es necesario para comerlas... Compro las pipas de girasol en el mercado. Me gusta ponerlos en la ensalada. Me gusta el "crunch".

¿Está bien la palabra pipas?

Para mi, pipas se usan para fumar.

A mi me gusta comer pepas de girasol. Por estos lares, a las pepas le llaman semillas.

En México se usa "semillas de girasol". Las "pepitas" (siempre en diminutivo) son las semillas de calabaza.

Por cierto, en algunas regiones del centro de México, los girasoles son éstos:








...y los mirasoles son como éstos (hay de muchos colores y siempre miran al sol):
