The song 'Hoy' by Gloria Estefan
Hello ,
I am trying to translate the song 'Hoy' by Gloria Estefan, but I come up against some expressions that I cannot properly translate. I could use some help, thanks. Number one: Tengo una huella perdida entre tu sombra y la mia que no me deja mentir on internet it is translated as I have a lost print between your shadow and mine that stops me from lying 'a lost print' is the official translation for 'una huella perdida'. It does not really makes sense, you cannot always literally translate. What would be the no-literal/real translation? Same for Tengo una mañana constante y una acuarela esperando verte pintado de azul. It is translated as: I have a frustrating morning and a watercolor waiting to see you painted in blue that reveals me to you Is 'una manana constante' really 'a frustrating morning'? It is also translated as a 'constant morning'. And 'una acuarela esperando verte pintado de azul'. Is the painting waiting to be painted in blue, or is it already blue, so what is waiting then? Confusing. And also: Tengo una frase colgada, entre mi boca y mi almohada, que me desnuda ante ti. translated as 'I have a frozen phrase between my mouth and my pillow that reveals me to you.' A frozen phrase does not make sense. In proper english a frozen phrase can be a sentence that is in the mind but will not be spoken. It is frozen. But why in this case would it reveal if it is not spoken. Or would it reveal if it is spoken? I hope I have not driven everybody 'loco' with my questions, but it would help a lot. Thanks a lot Nina |

First off, the translation you're looking at is poorly done. Hence your questions.
Second, poetry and lyrics are difficult to translate. una huella perdida = lost trace, lost fingerprint/print que no me deja mentir = that won't let me lie una mañana constante can mean 'a morning like all the rest' (unchanging) una acuarela esperando verte pintado de azul = a watercolor waiting to see you painted (in) blue (of course, the author may have a very different meaning in mind) una frase colgada = a hung phrase/sentence |
